Kawasaki ZX-4R Ninja. The Corner Eater
The new Ninja ZX-4R is powered by a 399cc inline-four engine that produces around 80bhp (77bhp in some markets) using a RAM supercharger. When it goes on sale, it will be the only model in the 400cc class with this type of powerplant. In a lightweight, compact chassis based on the Ninja ZX-25R, it will deliver excellent acceleration in this capacity class, combining strong low- and mid-range torque with strong high-rpm power – maximum power is achieved at a whopping 15,000rpm! The bike weighs 188kg (189kg for the SE).
The bike inherits the aggressive looks and premium features expected from the Ninja ZX family, while also delivering a classy exhaust note. A large air intake is located in the middle of the upper cowl, creating a recognizable styling cue from the entire Ninja ZX series. Ram Air ducts are located on the left side of the front fork, leading to the airbox.
Regardless of skill level or experience, Ninja ZX-4R riders will have a blast riding the bike, whether on the track or the street. The bike’s creators have dubbed the concept “Apex Predator,” which can be roughly translated as “corner eater.” As for the frame, its design is inspired by the elements and design concept of the Ninja ZX-10RR motorcycle. The ZX-4R achieves ideal front-to-rear weight distribution and a perfect balance between stiffness and flex, providing precise handling and excellent rider response. Up front, it features Showa SFF-BP forks (the Ninja ZX-4R SE and Ninja ZX-4RR models also feature a spring preload adjuster), while the rear features back-link suspension, offering the same progressive characteristics as the supersport Ninja ZX-10R. Additionally, the Ninja ZX-4RR variant has the same type of rear shock absorber (Showa BFRC-lite) as the Ninja ZX-10R.
Braking power is provided by 290mm semi-floating discs and radial-mount monobloc calipers at the front, while a 220mm disc is used at the rear. This combination provides excellent feel, response and braking power. Electronic aids are also found on board the latest Kawasaki: dedicated riding modes that combine KTRC traction control settings and various power modes. From four different modes – Sport, Road, Rain and Rider (manual) – everyone can easily select the right settings for the conditions and their own riding style. The Ninja ZX-4R SE and Ninja ZX-4RR are also equipped with KQS – Kawasaki Quick Shifter, operating up/down.
The Ninja ZX-4R’s instrument panel features a 4.3-inch, fully digital, colour LCD screen that provides excellent readability. It also has a track mode that displays lap times, plus a highly readable tachometer that scales from 10,000 rpm upwards. Additionally, you can connect the ZX-4R’s on-board system to your smartphone using the Kawasaki Rideology app for a variety of additional features, including GPS route recording and bike information.
